Thong Sala — Koh Phangan's Front Door
Thong Sala is where Koh Phangan begins. Car ferries and high-speed catamarans from Koh Samui, Koh Tao and the Surat Thani mainland all dock at the pier here, making it the arrival point for almost every visitor to the island. Step off the boat and you're already in the middle of things: taxis and songthaews lined up for the onward ride, scooter rental shops on the main road, tour agencies ready to sort your onward tickets.
This is the island's practical centre — where the hospital and pharmacies are, where the ATMs cluster, where the supermarkets sit. It is not a beach resort, and its own shoreline is flat and shallow rather than the turquoise swimming water people come to Koh Phangan for. Most visitors base themselves at a proper beach and use Thong Sala for errands, supplies and onward travel. But the town consistently surprises people with the quality of its food scene: the night market near the pier draws both locals and travellers for cheap, freshly cooked Thai street food, and the restaurant strip has a range that goes well beyond the usual.
Thong Sala is also where the island's longer-stay and nomad community does its daily life — not because it is scenic, but because everything is here. Coworking spaces, fresh-produce markets, decent cafes, the bank branch for wire transfers, the scooter mechanic who can fix what the hill roads broke. Understanding Thong Sala means understanding Koh Phangan's practical backbone, and on any trip of more than a few days, that is worth knowing.
