Diving & Snorkelling on Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan diving — Sail Rock and the underwater world

Koh Phangan is best known for the Full Moon Party and the west-coast wellness scene, but its dive credentials are just as real. The island sits in the middle of a triangle of Gulf dive destinations — with Koh Tao to the north and Koh Samui to the south — and the seamount known as Sail Rock, roughly midway between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, is one of the most-dived sites in the entire Gulf of Thailand.

The dive infrastructure has grown up around the north-coast village of Chaloklum, which sits closest to Sail Rock and has several long-established operators running day trips. The west coast at Haad Yao adds a second base. For anyone who wants the underwater experience without a boat trip, the Koh Ma reef on the northwest corner delivers the island's best snorkelling just a few steps off the beach.

Sail Rock — the headline dive

Sail Rock (Hin Bai) is an offshore seamount and one of the Gulf of Thailand's most celebrated dive sites, reachable on day trips from Chaloklum and Haad Yao. The site is known for its dramatic underwater chimney, strong thermoclines and the large schools of fish that gather around the pinnacle. Multiple operators on Koh Phangan run day trips here, with diving for certified divers and introductory dives for first-timers.

Koh Ma — the best snorkelling

Koh Ma is a tiny uninhabited islet off Mae Haad on the northwest tip, reached on foot across a sandbar at low tide. Its fringing reef is widely considered the best shore-entry snorkelling on the island — clownfish, parrotfish and live coral in clear, shallow water, all without a boat or a certification. Guided half-day snorkel tours also depart from here, covering the reef and the sandbar walk in one trip.

PADI courses — learn to dive here

Koh Phangan's dive centres offer PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses, combining pool or shallow-water pool sessions with open-water dives at local sites. The island's calm west-coast bays and reef spots suit beginners well, and a Koh Phangan course typically includes a Sail Rock trip as part of the qualification dives — a rare chance to graduate at one of the Gulf's best sites.

Local reefs & northwest sites

Beyond Sail Rock, the island's northwest corner holds a scatter of reef sites suitable for less experienced divers and for snorkellers. Blue Horizon and other Chaloklum operators run trips to these local pinnacles alongside the Koh Ma reef — useful for second dives after Sail Rock, for Open Water qualifying dives or for a half-day rather than a full-day trip.

Koh Phangan diving, answered

Do I need a diving certification to dive on Koh Phangan?
+
Not for an introductory dive. All of Koh Phangan's dive operators offer discover-scuba or introductory dives where a certified instructor accompanies you throughout — no prior certification needed. For day trips to Sail Rock and other open-water sites, an Open Water certification is required for independent diving. PADI Open Water courses are available at every dive centre on the island and can be completed in a few days.
Where do the dive boats leave from?
+
The main departure point for Sail Rock and north-coast dive trips is the fishing village of Chaloklum, on the island's north coast, which sits closest to the Sail Rock seamount. Haad Yao Divers operates from the west coast at Haad Yao, also running Sail Rock day trips. If you're staying on the south or east side of the island, Chaloklum is around 40–50 minutes by scooter or songthaew.
What is the best time of year for diving on Koh Phangan?
+
Visibility and sea conditions are generally best during the dry season (roughly November to April), when the Gulf of Thailand is calmer and underwater visibility tends to be higher. Koh Ma snorkelling is good year-round but at its clearest from December to April. The wet season (May–October) brings more swell and sometimes reduced visibility, though experienced divers still visit Sail Rock outside the monsoon peaks.
What is Sail Rock like as a dive site?
+
Sail Rock (Hin Bai) is an offshore seamount — a underwater pinnacle rising from the seabed — in the open Gulf of Thailand between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. It is known for its underwater chimney (a vertical swim-through feature), the strong thermoclines that bring cooler, cleaner water, and the large schools of fish around the pinnacle. It is widely considered one of the top dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand and appears on most certified divers' itineraries for the region.
Can I snorkel without going on a dive trip?
+
Yes. Koh Ma on the northwest coast is the island's best shore-entry snorkelling — you walk across the sandbar at low tide and snorkel the fringing reef from the beach. No boat, no certification and no guide are strictly required, though guided snorkel tours are available and cover more of the reef. Haad Salad and Mae Haad also have accessible reef patches close to shore.
