Koh Phangan Weather Guide

Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, which gives it a climate that runs almost opposite to the more-famous Andaman coast. While Phuket and Krabi are wettest in August, Koh Phangan's monsoon peaks in October and November. The dry, calm season — when most visitors arrive — runs from December through to April. In between, a gentle green season (May to August) brings brief showers and a lush, quieter island.

The most important thing to understand: even in the rainy months, the island doesn't become unusable. Showers in the green season are usually short, arrive in the afternoon, and clear into warm evenings. The wellness scene, yoga studios and massage practitioners run year-round and are entirely unaffected by weather. Only the October–November peak of the monsoon brings genuinely disruptive, day-long rain — and even then, the island empties out to near-zero crowds and offers its lowest prices of the year.

The three seasons

Dry season

December – April

The classic beach window. Skies are clear, the Gulf is calm and glassy, and the northeast trade winds keep things pleasant. February and March are the most reliably sunny months of the year. Peak season means more visitors and higher accommodation prices, but the conditions justify it.

Green season

May – August

The island at its most lush and least crowded. Showers are common but typically short — a burst in the afternoon, clearing into a warm evening. Mornings are often perfectly clear. The jungle turns deep green, waterfalls run fuller, and accommodation is easier to find and cheaper.

Monsoon season

September – November

The wettest period, with October and November bringing the heaviest, most persistent rain. Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, where the monsoon peaks later in the year — opposite to the Andaman coast. Seas can be rough and some ferry services run reduced schedules. Adventurous travellers find rock-bottom prices and an island that's almost entirely their own.

Koh Phangan is on the Gulf of Thailand, where the monsoon arrives later in the year than on the Andaman coast — so while Phuket dries out in November, Phangan is at its wettest. The calmest, clearest water coincides with the dry season (December–April). During the monsoon peak (October–November), the sea can be rough and swimming at open beaches is sometimes inadvisable.
Can I visit Koh Phangan in the rainy season?

Yes, though October and November require realistic expectations. The island is still beautiful, prices are lowest, and the wellness and yoga scene runs regardless of weather. Diving is weather-dependent but sometimes runs even in rain when seas allow. The biggest practical risks are ferry disruptions and limited beach time. If your trip is built around the beach, aim for December–April instead.
How does Koh Phangan weather compare to Koh Samui or Koh Tao?

All three islands share the Gulf of Thailand climate — dry season December to April, wet season peaking October to November. Koh Tao, further north, is often slightly drier in the shoulder months. Koh Samui has more developed infrastructure so weather disruption is less of a practical problem. On all three, the worst months for rain are October and November. Unlike the Andaman coast islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta), the Gulf islands' rainy season runs opposite — they're wettest in November, not August.
