Getting to Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 100 kilometres off the mainland coast of Surat Thani province. There is no airport and no bridge — every journey to the island ends with a boat crossing, and the main arrival point is Thong Sala pier on the south coast.
That crossing is what sets the pace. Once you step off the boat, the island's road network, scooter culture and scattered beaches take over. The journey is part of the experience, and most travellers find the logistics simpler than they expect once they understand the key route: get yourself to Surat Thani or Koh Samui, and a ferry will do the rest.
The four main routes — from Bangkok, from Surat Thani, from Koh Samui and from Koh Tao — cover almost every combination of origin and budget. Each has its own rhythm and trade-offs between speed, cost and comfort.
