Getting to Koh Phangan

Thong Sala pier on Koh Phangan — the island's main ferry arrival point

Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, roughly 100 kilometres off the mainland coast of Surat Thani province. There is no airport and no bridge — every journey to the island ends with a boat crossing, and the main arrival point is Thong Sala pier on the south coast.

That crossing is what sets the pace. Once you step off the boat at Thong Sala, the island's road network, scooter culture and scattered beaches take over. Most areas are reachable within 20 to 40 minutes, though some destinations need more planning — reaching Thong Nai Pan, Koh Phangan's most remote upscale resort bay, means crossing a steep mountain ridge in the northeast: add 30 to 45 minutes by shared songthaew from Thong Sala pier. The journey is part of the experience, and most travellers find the logistics simpler than they expect once they understand the key route: get yourself to Surat Thani or Koh Samui, and a ferry will do the rest.

The main routes — from Bangkok, from Surat Thani, from Koh Samui, from Koh Tao, from Phuket and from Krabi — cover almost every combination of origin and budget. Each has its own rhythm and trade-offs between speed, cost and comfort.

Many travellers time their journey around a specific event: the monthly Full Moon Party Koh Phangan at Haad Rin is the most common reason to book a particular date, since Haad Rin itself and the ferries south from Koh Samui fill up weeks in advance around the full moon.

Routes to Koh Phangan

Bangkok · South Thailand · Multiple options

From Bangkok — fly, train or bus to the ferry

Bangkok is the most common starting point. The fastest option is flying to Surat Thani Airport (URT), from where shared transfers or taxis connect to the Don Sak ferry pier for the crossing to Koh Phangan — total journey time door-to-pier is typically under two hours by this route. The overnight train from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong or Krung Thep Aphiwat station drops you in Surat Thani by morning, well-rested for the ferry. Night buses from Mo Chit and Ekkamai follow a similar schedule, arriving early enough to catch morning departures. Combined train-ferry and bus-ferry tickets sold at Bangkok travel agencies simplify the connection. Whichever option you choose, Surat Thani is the gateway — from there it is always a ferry.

Don Sak pier · Gulf of Thailand · Direct crossing

From Surat Thani — ferries from Don Sak pier

The main mainland-to-island crossing runs from Don Sak pier in Surat Thani province across the Gulf of Thailand to Thong Sala pier, Koh Phangan's main harbour and the hub of island life. Both slow car ferries and faster express boats make the crossing; journey times vary between roughly 90 minutes on the fastest services and around two and a half hours on the car ferries, which carry scooters and vehicles. Ferries run throughout the day. If you're arriving from Surat Thani train station or the airport, shared minibuses and transfers to Don Sak pier connect to ferry departure times. Thong Sala is where you'll arrive — the island's main town, with taxis, songthaews and scooter rental immediately at the pier.

Koh Samui · 30–45 min · Speedboat or ferry

From Koh Samui — the short hop

Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are neighbours in the Gulf of Thailand, separated by a short stretch of water. The crossing by speedboat is the fastest inter-island transfer in the region — roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on the service and sea state, running from Samui's Na Thon, Bangrak or Maenam piers to Thong Sala. Slower car ferries also make the run and are the choice if you're bringing a vehicle across. Samui's airport (USM) is served by Bangkok Airways flights from Bangkok, so many travellers fly into Samui and take the boat to Koh Phangan — a genuinely quick combination. Combined airport-taxi-ferry packages are widely sold on Samui.

Koh Tao · Gulf island chain · North to south

From Koh Tao — the island chain ferry

Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui form the Gulf island chain, and ferries run between all three in both directions. If you're travelling south from Koh Tao — the diving island — to Koh Phangan, you have both slow night ferries (usually departing Koh Tao in the evening and arriving Thong Sala early morning) and faster daytime express services. The same route works in reverse for heading north. Travelling between all three islands without returning to the mainland is straightforward: book each leg as you go or buy multi-hop tickets from travel agencies on each island. Koh Phangan sits in the middle of the chain, making it a natural base for exploring all three.

Phuket · Andaman to Gulf · Fly or overland

From Phuket — fly or bus across the peninsula

Phuket sits on Thailand's Andaman coast; Koh Phangan is in the Gulf of Thailand — the Thai peninsula separates the two, so every route involves crossing it. The quickest option is a short domestic flight from Phuket Airport (HKT) to Surat Thani Airport (URT), then a transfer to Don Sak pier and the ferry to Thong Sala. The overland alternative — bus or shared minibus from Phuket to Surat Thani — takes four to five hours by road before connecting with the same Don Sak ferry crossing. Combined bus-ferry tickets simplify the journey.

Krabi · Andaman to Gulf · Bus + ferry

From Krabi — bus across the peninsula to the ferry

Krabi sits on Thailand's Andaman coast; Koh Phangan is in the Gulf of Thailand — every route involves crossing the Thai peninsula. The standard option is a bus or shared minibus from Krabi town or Ao Nang to Surat Thani, roughly three to four hours by road, then a transfer to Don Sak pier and the ferry to Thong Sala. Combined bus-ferry tickets simplify the journey and are sold at travel agencies in Krabi and Ao Nang.

Getting here, answered

Is there an airport on Koh Phangan?
+
No — Koh Phangan does not have a commercial airport. The island is accessible only by boat. The nearest airports are Surat Thani (URT) on the mainland and Koh Samui (USM) on the neighbouring island. From either, you travel by transfer to the ferry pier and then by boat to Koh Phangan. Flying into Surat Thani is usually the cheapest option; flying into Samui (served almost exclusively by Bangkok Airways) is faster but more expensive.
How long does the ferry from Surat Thani take?
+
The main crossing from Don Sak pier in Surat Thani to Thong Sala pier on Koh Phangan takes roughly 90 minutes on the fastest express boats and around two and a half hours on the slower car ferries. Services run throughout the day. Add transfer time from Surat Thani Airport or the train station to Don Sak pier — typically 45 minutes to an hour.
What is the fastest way to get to Koh Phangan?
+
The fastest overall route from Bangkok is to fly to Surat Thani (approximately one hour in the air) and then take an express boat from Don Sak pier — total travel time including transfers is typically four to five hours. Flying to Koh Samui and crossing by speedboat is a similar total time, sometimes faster depending on connections. Both are significantly quicker than the overnight train or bus.
Can I take a train to Koh Phangan?
+
You can take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani — overnight sleeper trains run the route and arrive in the early morning, which connects well with morning ferry departures. The train itself does not go to the island; the final leg is always a ferry from Don Sak pier. Many travellers enjoy the overnight train precisely because it covers the mainland leg while they sleep, arriving rested and in time for the crossing.
Where do ferries arrive on Koh Phangan?
+
Most ferries from the mainland and from Koh Samui arrive at Thong Sala pier, which is the main port town on the island's south coast. Thong Sala is the hub of island life — you'll find taxis, songthaew pick-up trucks, scooter rental, ATMs, supermarkets and the island's main market within easy walking or a short ride from the pier. A smaller number of speedboat services from Samui and Koh Tao also use Mae Haad pier on the north coast.
How do I get around Koh Phangan after I arrive?
+
Scooter rental is the dominant way to get around — it gives you the flexibility the island's winding roads and scattered beaches require. Taxis and songthaew shared trucks are available at Thong Sala pier and can be booked throughout the island, though they're most reliable around the main south coast. Some beaches in the north and east are accessible only by longtail taxi-boat — notably Haad Khuat (Bottle Beach) from Chaloklum, and Haad Yuan and Haad Tien from Haad Rin. Grab operates in the main tourist areas for standard taxi rides. Walking is only realistic within Thong Sala itself.
Can I bring a vehicle on the ferry to Koh Phangan?
+
Yes — the car ferries from Don Sak pier to Thong Sala carry motorcycles and cars. If you're bringing your own vehicle from the mainland, you book vehicle passage on the car ferry alongside your passenger ticket. This is less common than it sounds: most visitors rent a scooter on the island rather than bringing one. Rental scooters are plentiful, affordable and available directly at Thong Sala pier.
How much does the ferry to Koh Phangan cost?
+
Ferry prices change seasonally and by operator — it is not possible to give a current accurate figure here. Check directly with the ferry operators, online booking platforms, or the travel agencies at Thong Sala pier and on Koh Samui for up-to-date prices. As a rough indication, the Surat Thani crossing has historically been the cheapest option; speedboat crossings from Samui cost more but are significantly faster.
