Thong Sala

Thong Sala is Koh Phangan's main town and the island's front door. The car ferries and most passenger boats from Koh Samui, Koh Tao and the mainland dock here, so almost everyone sets foot in Thong Sala before heading anywhere else. It's where the island keeps its working parts: the banks and ATMs, the hospital and pharmacies, the big supermarkets, the scooter rentals, the laundries and the visa-run agencies. The famous night market sets up near the pier most evenings, packing the lanes with cheap, excellent Thai street food, and the town has quietly become a real eating town in its own right — long-loved bakeries and cafes, a strong spread of international restaurants (Indian, Mexican, seafood), and a growing clutch of laptop-friendly cafes for the digital-nomad crowd.

The trade-off is simple: Thong Sala is a hub, not a beach resort. The waterfront here is Ao Bang Charu — flat, shallow and calm, fine for a sunset walk but not the turquoise-swimming postcard most people come to the island for. The feel is practical and lived-in rather than scenic: errands by day, a good meal and a market wander by night. Accommodation leans toward hostels, budget bungalows and a few comfortable guesthouses rather than beach clubs. Most visitors base themselves at a proper beach (Haad Rin, Srithanu, the Thong Nai Pan bays) and treat Thong Sala as the place they pass through to stock up, eat well and catch the boat.

Best for Best for arriving/departing travellers, errand days, budget stays and anyone who wants the island's best concentration of food, services and cafes within walking distance.

Thong Sala, answered

Is Thong Sala a good place to stay for a beach holiday?
+
Not really. Thong Sala is the island's main town and port, and its own shoreline (Ao Bang Charu) is flat, shallow and calm rather than a swimming beach. It's ideal for a night or two around your ferry, for a budget base, or if you value being near shops, banks and restaurants. For beach days, most people base at Haad Rin, Srithanu or Thong Nai Pan and visit Thong Sala for supplies.
What is Thong Sala best known for?
+
Food and services. The night market by the pier serves cheap, authentic Thai street food most evenings, and the town has a genuinely strong dining scene — well-regarded bakeries and cafes, plus Indian, Mexican and seafood spots. It's also the island's practical centre: the hospital, banks and ATMs, big supermarkets, scooter rental and ferry tickets are all here.
How do I get to the rest of the island from Thong Sala?
+
Thong Sala is the main transport hub, so this is the easiest place to sort onward travel. Shared songthaew (pickup taxis) leave from near the pier and market to the main beaches, and scooter rental is widely available in town. Because the ferries dock here, it's also the natural starting and ending point for almost any island trip.
