Day Trips from Koh Phangan

Ang Thong, Koh Tao, the Koh Ma sandbar and Bottle Beach — the best excursions from your base.

Day Trips from Koh Phangan — Koh Phangan, Thailand

Koh Phangan is a destination in its own right, but it also sits at the centre of a triangle of Gulf of Thailand islands — Koh Samui to the south, Koh Tao to the north, and the Ang Thong archipelago to the west. That geography makes it an unusually good base for day excursions: you can spend a morning in one of Asia's most photogenic marine parks, a lazy afternoon on a quiet longtail to a beach without a road, or a fast-ferry crossing to a neighbouring island and still be back for sunset.

Ang Thong Marine National Park

This is the day trip most worth prioritising. Ang Thong is a protected archipelago of 42 limestone islands to the west of Koh Phangan, accessible only by organised tour boat. The centrepiece is an emerald lagoon hidden inside one of the larger islands — a circular lake of jade-green water ringed by karst walls, reached by a moderately steep hike. Combine that with snorkelling over reef fish, sea kayaking between islands, and the sheer visual drama of jungle-covered limestone karsts rising from flat water, and it is easy to see why this is consistently the highest-rated excursion from the island. Tour boats depart from Thong Sala pier; check the tours directory for operators and options.

Koh Tao — the diver's island

Koh Tao sits roughly an hour north of Koh Phangan by high-speed ferry and is one of the most concentrated dive-training destinations in the world. The island is small and easy to walk, with coral-fringed bays, good snorkelling from shore at spots like Tanote Bay, and clear water that makes even a basic mask-and-fins session genuinely rewarding. Most people arrive for a day and end up staying; if you're specifically interested in diving, the diving and snorkelling guide covers what to expect. Ferries to Koh Tao depart regularly from Thong Sala pier.

Koh Samui — a short crossing south

Thailand's most-developed holiday island is a quick high-speed ferry hop south of Koh Phangan. The two islands feel quite different: Samui has an international airport, large resort hotels, and a noticeably more commercial pace. A Samui day trip is worth it for ATMs, specialist shops, or international food options that the smaller island can't always supply — or simply to see the contrast. Return ferries run through the day from Thong Sala; the ferry and transport guide has current schedule details and booking advice.

Koh Ma sandbar — half-day by longtail

Koh Ma is a small island in the northwest connected to the mainland at Mae Haad beach by a shallow sandbar that you can walk or wade across at low tide. The surrounding water is the island's best accessible snorkelling — calm, sheltered, and with healthy coral patches close to shore. A guided Koh Ma snorkel trip combines the sandbar walk with a boat circuit of the reef; you can also ride a scooter up independently and time your arrival for low tide. It works well as a half-day, easily combined with a stop at Salad Beach or the café strip on the west coast.

Bottle Beach by longtail

Bottle Beach — Haad Khuat in Thai — is Koh Phangan's most isolated bay, with no road access. The way there is part of the appeal: a longtail taxi-boat from Chaloklum village on the north coast, a short crossing around the headland to a wide arc of pale sand backed by jungle. The bungalow operations here are simple and the vibe is stripped-back in the best sense. It works as a full-day trip if you bring food or eat at one of the beach kitchens; go early to claim a spot before the midday boats arrive. Full details at the Bottle Beach guide.

Than Sadet and the waterfall interior

Not an island-hopping trip, but the island's interior rewards a dedicated half-day. Than Sadet National Park holds waterfalls with historical inscriptions left by Thai kings, and the river pools are clean and swimmable. A guided trek covers the main cascades and surrounding jungle. Combine it with a stop at the Thong Nai Pan bays on the way back if you're coming from the south. The waterfalls and hiking guide has the full picture of what's in the interior.

Practical notes

For off-island trips, book Ang Thong tours at least a day ahead in high season — boats cap at a fixed passenger count and sell out. Koh Tao and Koh Samui ferries run frequently enough that same-day travel usually works, though the routes fill fast around Full Moon Party dates. For all water trips: reef-safe sunscreen, a light layer for the crossing, and cash — beach vendors rarely take cards. The packing list covers what to bring for a day on the water.
