Diving & Snorkeling on Koh Phangan

Sail Rock, Koh Ma and the sites that make this island one of Thailand's best underwater destinations.

Diving & Snorkeling on Koh Phangan — Koh Phangan, Thailand

Koh Phangan sits at the edge of one of the Gulf of Thailand's richest marine areas, and yet most visitors walk past the dive shops on their way to the beach. They're missing something. Within a 45-minute boat ride you can drift past whale sharks, leopard sharks and schools of barracuda — or simply snorkel the clearest reef on the island in flip-flops. Here is where to go and how.

Sail Rock — the headline dive

Sail Rock (Hin Bai) is a seamount that rises from 40 m to break the surface about 15 km north of the island, and it is one of the best dives in the whole Gulf of Thailand. A vertical chimney runs through the rock, letting you descend through a column of fish and emerge at depth surrounded by giant grouper, barracuda and sometimes whale sharks between February and April. All the local dive centres run trips here; expect a full-day excursion with two dives. Experienced divers often rate it higher than anything on Koh Tao, and it is reachable from Koh Phangan without the crowds.

Koh Ma — snorkeling for everyone

For non-divers (or a gentle warm-up day), the reef off Mae Haad is the go-to. A natural sandbar connects the shore to the islet of Koh Ma at low tide — walk out at ankle depth and drop into the water on the far side. Healthy hard coral, parrotfish, angelfish and the occasional reef shark make it one of the easiest and most rewarding snorkel spots on the island. The Koh Ma snorkel and sandbar tour runs half-day trips with gear and a guide if you would rather arrive by boat.

The dive shops

Two shops have a strong track record on the island. Blue Horizon Diving operates from the north coast and runs small-group trips to Sail Rock, Koh Ma and several lesser-known pinnacles. Haad Yao Divers is based at the west-coast bay of Haad Yao, well-placed for both the offshore sites and the calm in-shore reefs. Both run PADI Open Water courses if you want to learn from scratch — the sheltered bays make Koh Phangan a good place to get certified, then graduate straight to Sail Rock. Find more operators under Tours & Nature.

Other sites worth knowing

Beyond Sail Rock and Koh Ma, the rocky headlands at the north end of Haad Khom hold decent coral, and the sheltered bay at Chaloklum is calm enough for new swimmers. Wreck divers can ask the shops about the occasional barge and pinnacle sites scattered around the northern point — diveable year-round and rarely crowded.

When to go

Visibility peaks between November and April, when the Gulf is calm and clear. The whale shark season at Sail Rock runs roughly February to May, though sightings are never guaranteed.
