Thong Nai Pan Beach

Thong Nai Pan sits at the far northeast of Koh Phangan, made up of two horseshoe bays separated by a low headland: Thong Nai Pan Yai (the larger) and Thong Nai Pan Noi (the smaller, quieter one). The pale sand, jungle backdrop and gentler crowds have long made this the island's go-to for people who want something more refined than the party beaches without going fully off-grid. Noi tends to draw the smarter resorts and a slightly slower pace, while Yai is broader, has a longer beach walk and a wider spread of bungalows and beach restaurants.
The catch — and the reason it stays relatively peaceful — is the road in. The access route climbs and drops over a steep ridge, so most visitors arrive by songthaew or a confident scooter rather than passing through. Once you're down at the water, though, the payoff is some of the most reliably swimmable sea on the island.
- Two bays: Yai (larger, livelier) and Noi (smaller, quieter)
- Deeper, clearer water that swims well all year, unlike west-coast beaches
- Northeast-facing — sunrise over the sea rather than sunset
- Mix of upscale resorts and laid-back beach bungalows
- Reached only via a steep ridge road, which keeps crowds down
