Getting to Koh Phangan

Ferries, flights and transfers — the practical version.

Getting to Koh Phangan — Koh Phangan, Thailand

Koh Phangan has no airport, so however you arrive, the last leg is always a boat. The good news: the connections are frequent and the crossing is short. Here’s how it works.

Via Koh Samui (fastest)

The nearest airport is on neighbouring Koh Samui, a 30–45 minute catamaran away. High-speed ferries run all day from Samui’s Maenam, Bang Rak and Nathon piers to Thong Sala — and to Haad Rin for party nights via the Haad Rin Queen ferry. Most island boat operators are listed under Tours & Nature.

Via Surat Thani (cheapest)

From the mainland, overnight buses and trains reach Surat Thani, where joint bus-and-ferry tickets carry you across to Thong Sala. It’s slower but easy on the budget — bring snacks and patience.

Getting around once you land

Songthaew taxis wait at Thong Sala pier; many resorts arrange pickups. The roads are hilly and some are steep, so if you rent a scooter, ride carefully and wear a helmet. Boat taxis also shuttle to remote bays like Bottle Beach — see the operators under Tours & Nature, including island boat tours.

Time your arrival

Boats fill up and prices rise around the Full Moon Party, so book the crossing ahead on party week. Then pick your bay with our where-to-stay guide and browse Hotels & Stays for a bed near your pier.
