Haad Rin
Haad Rin sits on Koh Phangan's south-eastern tip and is, above all, the home of the island's famous monthly Full Moon Party. The action centres on Sunrise Beach (Haad Rin Nok), a wide arc of sand that transforms once a month into a neon, fire-show, bucket-drink spectacle that draws thousands. The rest of the time it's the island's most concentrated stretch of bars, hostels, beach clubs and cheap eats, all packed into a small, walkable headland. You'll find party hostels and pool-party spots, an adults-only resort, lively beach bars and a surprising number of solid restaurants, including a couple of well-loved Italian places, clustered within a few minutes of each other.
The flip side is Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai) on the western shore, a short walk across the narrow neck of the peninsula. It's calmer, more swimmable and far quieter, the place people retreat to between parties or when they want a normal beach day. That split personality defines Haad Rin: it can be the loudest, most social corner of the island or a fairly mellow little beach town, depending which side of the headland you're on and where the moon is in its cycle. Because it's tucked at the far south-east, it feels slightly cut off from the rest of the island, you generally come here on purpose, by songthaew over the hills or by boat from the pier.
