Haad Rin, Koh Phangan: The Complete Area Guide

Haad Rin is the south-eastern tip of Koh Phangan — home of the Full Moon Party, two very different beaches, and the island's most self-contained neighbourhood. This guide covers both sides of the headland, where to stay, where to eat, how to do the party safely, and what Haad Rin is like on the many nights when the full moon isn't out.

Haad Rin, Koh Phangan: The Complete Area Guide
In this guide +

Haad Rin occupies a narrow headland at the far south-eastern tip of Koh Phangan. It is the island's most famous address, primarily because of the Full Moon Party — the monthly all-night beach event on Sunrise Beach that has drawn travellers here for decades and put the island on every backpacker itinerary in Southeast Asia. But Haad Rin is more nuanced than its headline suggests, and understanding both sides of the peninsula helps you get the trip right.

The headland is book-ended by two beaches that couldn't feel more different. Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) faces east, catches the morning light and transforms once a month into one of the world's most recognisable beach parties. Haad Rin Nai (Sunset Beach) faces west and is the calmer, more swimmable counterpart — the beach where people spend normal beach days, where the water is gentler and the atmosphere is quieter regardless of where the moon is. A short walk over the headland connects them.

Between the two beaches the village is the most compact, walkable neighbourhood on the island — a dense grid of restaurants, cafés, dive shops, tattoo parlours, pharmacies, hostels and resorts packed into a small area that you can navigate comfortably on foot. That density is both the appeal and the trade-off: Haad Rin hums with energy in a way that the rest of the island does not, but the quiet that characterises Sri Thanu or Thong Nai Pan is not what you come here for. You come here on purpose, and it rewards people who know why they're coming.

Sunrise Beach (Haad Rin Nok) — the Full Moon Party side

Haad Rin Nok is the wide, east-facing arc of sand that most people picture when they hear the name Haad Rin. It is a proper, sweepable beach — long enough to walk, soft sand backed by a wall of bars and restaurants, with clear Gulf of Thailand water that is generally swimmable outside of the rougher wet-season months. On most days it has a relaxed, fairly sociable beach bar atmosphere: sun loungers, cocktails, people reading, the occasional fire show practice late in the afternoon.

Once a month, on the night of the full moon, the beach transforms completely. The Full Moon Party runs through the night — sound systems, neon paint, fire ropes, bucket cocktails and a crowd of thousands that turns the beach into a singular, raucous spectacle. The party is the reason most travellers come to Haad Rin, and on the right night it is genuinely exhilarating. The practical notes: arrive after dark, keep your valuables to an absolute minimum, wear shoes you don't mind losing, and never accept drinks from strangers. The fire rope games at the shoreline are for onlookers, not participants. Medical posts run through the night; know where the nearest one is before you need it.

On non-full-moon nights, Haad Rin Nok is simply a lively beach bar strip — busier than most of the island, quieter than on party nights, and a good base for a social evening without the full intensity.

Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai) — the other side of the headland

Cross the narrow neck of the headland for five or ten minutes and you arrive at a different world. Haad Rin Nai faces west toward the Gulf sunset and is consistently the calmer, more swimmable side of the peninsula. The beach is flatter, the water is shallower and sheltered from the east-coast swell, and the atmosphere is gentler at every point in the lunar cycle. Most of the more comfortable resort accommodation clusters on this side precisely because it stays peaceful even when Sunrise Beach is at full volume.

Explorar Koh Phangan is the most polished adults-only resort on Haad Rin Nai, a modern property with a swim-up bar and strong reviews that suits travellers who want to be close to the Full Moon Party scene without being in the middle of it. Cocohut is another well-regarded resort on this side of the bay, with a pool and a more laid-back feel than the party hostels a short walk away. For sunset, claim a spot on the beach or a beach bar with a west-facing outlook — Haad Rin Nai does not get the dramatic open-water horizon of the west-coast beaches, but the soft evening light over the bay is a pleasant and overlooked end to any day.

Where to stay in Haad Rin

Accommodation in Haad Rin covers a wider range than the party reputation implies. The area has everything from social hostels built specifically around the Full Moon Party to adults-only resorts, mid-market beach hotels and small guesthouses that suit people who want proximity to the action without being part of it every night.

MBAR Hostel sits right in the heart of Haad Rin, a short walk from Sunrise Beach and built for travellers who want the social atmosphere and an easy stumble home after the party. It has a bar on site, a mix of dorm and private rooms, and the kind of community energy that makes it easy to meet people on a solo trip. Haad Rin Beach Resort is a more traditional hotel option on the beach, suited to couples or travellers who want a proper room and direct beach access at a moderate price point. Little Paradise offers another comfortable mid-range option, well-reviewed for its combination of ease and location.

The choice between Nok and Nai sides matters. Staying on Sunrise Beach puts you in the thick of the nightlife scene. Staying on Sunset Beach means you can join the party and walk home in relative quiet. For a first Full Moon Party, being close to Haad Rin Nok is convenient; for longer stays, many people prefer the calmer west side.

Eating and drinking in Haad Rin

Haad Rin has the island's most concentrated cluster of restaurants and bars outside of Thong Sala, and the density means you rarely have to go far for a decent meal. The range runs from cheap beach-bar Thai food and fruit shakes to proper sit-down restaurants that have built a loyal following over years of operation.

Monnalisa Ristorante Italiano is the area's most established dinner spot — a long-running Italian restaurant that has become a fixture for travellers who want a proper meal with pasta and pizza rather than pad thai every night of the week. Vertigo Resto Bar is another well-regarded option in the area, offering a varied menu in a relaxed setting. He Eat My Favorite Restaurant is a perennial local favourite, well-loved for its Thai food and consistent quality across a longer Haad Rin stay.

The beach bar scene on Sunrise Beach provides the island's most social daytime and evening drinking options, with fire shows and music setting the mood most evenings. On Full Moon nights the entire beach becomes one interconnected party strip, and pre-booked wristbands or entry passes smooth the arrival considerably.

Getting to Haad Rin and getting around

Haad Rin sits at the south-eastern tip of Koh Phangan, the point of the island furthest from Thong Sala pier in road distance. The main route from Thong Sala runs inland through Ban Tai and then over a hilly section before descending to the headland — a journey that takes longer than a straight-line glance at the map would suggest. Shared songthaew taxis (pickup trucks) run this route regularly from the Thong Sala pier area, and on Full Moon nights dedicated party transfer services run from guesthouses across the island.

Scooter rental is the most flexible way to reach and leave Haad Rin outside of party nights, though the steep sections of the inland road should not be underestimated, particularly for riders unfamiliar with the island's road conditions. On party nights, riding back late is ill-advised; a pre-arranged taxi or staying close to the beach are the sensible options.

Once in Haad Rin the village is compact and walkable. The two beaches are connected by a short path over the headland; restaurants, shops and accommodation cluster within a few minutes of each other. Beyond the village, the rest of Koh Phangan requires a scooter or taxi — Haad Rin's south-east position means the wellness scene of Sri Thanu, the diving of Chaloklum and the quiet bays of Thong Nai Pan all require a deliberate trip across the island.

Good to know

Is the Full Moon Party the only reason to go to Haad Rin?
+
No. Haad Rin has two distinct beaches, a walkable village with genuinely good restaurants, comfortable resort accommodation on the calmer Sunset Beach side, and a lively beach bar scene that runs independently of the party calendar. It is a legitimate base for a south-coast beach stay even when the moon is nowhere near full. That said, if you have no interest in the party scene, the rest of the island's beaches and neighbourhoods offer more peace at a lower energy baseline.
When does the Full Moon Party happen?
+
Once a month, around the full moon — the exact date follows the lunar calendar and occasionally shifts for Thai religious holidays or local logistics. Check an up-to-date Koh Phangan events calendar before booking, since the date can move by a day or two from the astronomical full moon and getting it wrong means a very different kind of night than you planned.
Which beach is better for swimming — Nok or Nai?
+
Haad Rin Nai (Sunset Beach on the west side) is generally the calmer and more swimmable option, with shallower, more sheltered water than the east-facing Sunrise Beach. Haad Rin Nok can pick up swell in rougher conditions, and on Full Moon nights the beach is so crowded that swimming is not the point. For a genuine beach swim, the Sunset Beach side is the better choice at any point in the lunar month.
Is Haad Rin good for families?
+
Only if you choose your timing carefully. Outside of Full Moon dates and the nights around them, Haad Rin quietens considerably and the resort accommodation on Haad Rin Nai is perfectly suitable for families wanting a beach base. On Full Moon nights and the surrounding days, the area is loud, late and crowded — not ideal for young children. If you are travelling with kids, consider basing yourself elsewhere and visiting Haad Rin for a day trip rather than staying.
How do I get back from Haad Rin after the Full Moon Party?
+
Songthaew taxis run back to Thong Sala and other parts of the island through the night and into the morning of the party, though they fill quickly and prices can reflect demand. Pre-booking a transfer through your accommodation is the low-stress option. Do not ride a scooter back after a full-party night — the road is hilly, dark in places, and the combination of fatigue and the late hour makes it one of the most common accident scenarios on the island.
