Haad Rin, Koh Phangan: The Complete Area Guide
Haad Rin occupies the island's southern tip — a compact, walkable peninsula with two distinct beaches, the world-famous Full Moon Party and a surprisingly self-sufficient village. This guide covers both beaches, where to stay and eat, and what to expect on and off Full Moon nights.
In this guide +
Haad Rin sits at the far southern tip of Koh Phangan, jutting into the Gulf of Thailand on a compact headland that most visitors know from a single image: Haad Rin Nok at dawn after a Full Moon night, a wide arc of pale sand still humming with the remains of the crowd. That image is real — but Haad Rin is also a neighbourhood with its own rhythms that run well beyond the monthly party.
The peninsula holds two beaches on opposite sides of the headland. Haad Rin Nok faces east — the famous one, a wide arc of sand that becomes the Full Moon Party venue once a month. Haad Rin Nai, also called Leela Beach, faces west into more sheltered water: calmer sea, less foot traffic, and the area's most polished resort accommodation sitting right on the sand. A short walk over the headland connects the two sides.
The village between the beaches is unusually self-contained. Restaurants, cafés, dive shops, pharmacies, tattoo studios, small convenience stores and accommodation ranging from backpacker hostels to adults-only beachfront resorts all fit within a fifteen-minute walk. Travellers who prefer not to rent a scooter will find Haad Rin the easiest part of the island to navigate entirely on foot — more so than anywhere else on Koh Phangan.
The two beaches — Nok and Nai
The east-facing Haad Rin Nok is the beach most visitors picture when they think of Koh Phangan. A wide arc of pale sand, it is calm and swimmable on most days outside of weather-driven swell from the east, and it is lined with bars, guesthouses and restaurants that occupy the particular register of Haad Rin in its everyday mode — relaxed, social, and slightly expectant of the party that comes once a month. The sea here faces east, which means the beach catches the sunrise rather than the sunset: a trade-off that rewards early risers with an uncrowded beach in golden morning light.
Haad Rin Nai — Leela Beach — is the west-facing counterpart. The water here sits in slightly more sheltered conditions and tends to be calmer and flatter than Nok, particularly in the dry season. The beach is shorter than Nok but holds an impressive concentration of the area's best accommodation: Explorar, Cocohut and Sarikantang all sit right on this strip, and their pool decks and beachfront terraces face west over the Gulf. The evening view from Leela Beach, with the sun dropping over open water, is one of the quieter pleasures of basing yourself in Haad Rin.
The headland between the two beaches is the core of the Haad Rin village — walk over it in any direction and you cross a compact grid of restaurants, coffee shops, small guesthouses and the occasional dive school within a few minutes. This walkability is the defining feature of Haad Rin as a neighbourhood. Arriving from most other parts of Koh Phangan, where reaching anywhere requires a scooter and a sometimes-challenging road, the density and ease of the headland feels genuinely different.
Where to stay — from party hostels to adults-only resorts
Haad Rin Nai (Leela Beach) holds the area's most refined accommodation. Explorar Koh Phangan is consistently one of the highest-rated resorts on the island — an adults-only (16+) property with a swim-up bar, an airy restaurant and a beachfront setting that keeps the party energy at arm's length while putting the Full Moon Party within easy reach when dates align. Cocohut Beach Resort, also on Leela Beach, sits at a similar upmarket register: villas, a pool, a spa and refined dining well above what most of Haad Rin is known for. Sarikantang rounds out the Leela Beach options with a more relaxed, mid-market tone — two outdoor pools, a beachside garden and an easy atmosphere for guests who want comfort without resort price tags.
For the Haad Rin Nok side and the headland village, the range is wider. Haad Rin Beach Resort puts guests directly on the Sunrise Beach sand in one of the headland's most landmark positions — pool, spa and sea views, at a step up from the budget accommodation that dominates much of the strip. Bayshore Resort is a well-known, informal option on the Nok side — casual rooms, a pool and a sea-view restaurant at reliable mid-market rates. Little Paradise, a short walk from Sunrise Beach, has built a consistent reputation for delivering more comfort than much of the competition at its price point and is a natural first choice for Full Moon visits that do not want to compromise on sleep quality.
For budget travellers and those who want to be directly in the party energy, MBAR Hostel puts you at the centre of the headland action with a social bar on site, dorm and private room options, and a short walk to Sunrise Beach. It is built for travellers who want to be where the energy is and then crash nearby once the night ends.

Eating and drinking in Haad Rin
The eating scene in Haad Rin punches above what the area's party reputation might suggest. The headland has a genuine spread of options — from well-loved local kitchens to sit-down international restaurants — and several of the better spots have built the kind of consistent reputation that brings people back on return visits.
He Eat is a Haad Rin institution: a consistently highly-rated restaurant that stands out in a headland packed with quick bars and beach eats. The kind of place Full Moon regulars add to their itinerary even before booking the party night — straightforward, warm and reliably above the local average. Monnalisa Ristorante Italiano is the area's long-established Italian, and has built its reputation over years among both visitors and Haad Rin regulars who want a proper sit-down meal beyond the beach-bar circuit. Pizza, pasta and a relaxed setting close to the party headland make it the reliable option when Thai food has been the only thing on the menu all week.
For drinks and a view, Vertigo Resto Bar sits on the Haad Rin headland with an elevated position above Sunrise Beach and the sea. On non-party nights it works as a destination in its own right — cocktails, sea air and party-ready energy without being inside the party. On Full Moon evenings it becomes one of the better places to watch the beach fill up before heading down.

The Full Moon Party — what to know before you go
The Full Moon Party takes place on Haad Rin Nok on the night of every full moon. It is one of Southeast Asia's best-known beach events, drawing tens of thousands of people from across the island and further afield. The beach transforms into a long strip of music stages, neon body paint, fire shows and bars that runs from the early evening into the following morning.
A few practical points matter before you arrive. Entry to the beach on Full Moon night requires a wristband — sold at checkpoints on the main approach routes into Haad Rin. If you are not staying at Haad Rin and are travelling in from another part of the island, arrange your transport in advance: songthaews and taxis fill quickly around the party hours, and the return journey in the early morning can require patience unless you have something pre-booked. The main road from Thong Sala runs a more frequent service on Full Moon nights than usual, but demand outstrips supply on the peak hours.
Haad Rin the day after the Full Moon Party is a different place — quieter, considerably more relaxed, with the beach raked clean and the headland settling back into its ordinary rhythm. If you are visiting specifically for the party, staying a night either side gives you the full character of the place rather than arriving and leaving in the same window.
Beyond Haad Rin — nearby bays by longtail
Some of the best experiences reachable from Haad Rin do not involve the headland itself. From the Sunrise Beach pier on the Haad Rin Nok side, longtail taxi-boats run to a handful of southeast-coast bays that no sealed road reaches — which is precisely why they stay quiet.
Haad Yuan, a short crossing around the rocky headland, is the closest and most visited of these bays: a generous sweep of jungle-backed sand with calm east-facing water, a scatter of simple bungalow operations and a pace that feels genuinely removed from the headland. The rocky points at each end of the bay offer the best snorkelling. Agree the return time and fare with the boatman before they leave.
Haad Tien lies south of Haad Yuan, another short boat hop along the headland. It is smaller and anchored by The Sanctuary Thailand, one of Southeast Asia's most established wellness retreats — running detox, fasting and yoga programmes from this beach for decades. Day visitors arriving by boat have historically been able to use some facilities; confirm this directly with The Sanctuary before building your afternoon around it.
Further along the southeast coast, boats from Haad Rin also serve Haad Sadet, the remote bay inside Namtok Than Sadet National Park where several Chakri dynasty kings inscribed their ciphers into riverside boulders. The river meets the sea here in natural freshwater pools that are among the clearest swimming spots on the island. A longer half-day trip, but a genuine one.

Getting to Haad Rin and getting around
Haad Rin sits at the far southeastern tip of the island, and the road in from Thong Sala runs along the south coast — a sealed, reasonably flat route that passes through Ban Tai before climbing slightly onto the headland. The journey takes roughly twenty minutes by scooter from Thong Sala, or longer in a shared songthaew depending on stops.
Shared songthaews (open pickup truck taxis) run the south-coast route between Thong Sala and Haad Rin throughout the day. On Full Moon nights a more intensive service runs in both directions, though demand is high and patience helps on the return journey. If you are arriving by ferry at Thong Sala pier, you can board a songthaew directly at the pier exit and ride it to the Haad Rin headland.
Once you are on the headland, Haad Rin is walkable in a way that no other part of the island matches. The two beaches are a few minutes apart over the headland hill; nearly everything a visitor needs — restaurants, shops, pharmacies, dive centres — sits in the compact village between them. A scooter gives you easy access to Ban Tai, Thong Sala and the rest of the island, but within Haad Rin itself, two legs will take you further than two wheels.
Good to know
- When is the Full Moon Party in Haad Rin? +
- The Full Moon Party takes place on Haad Rin Nok on the night of every full moon — once per month, year-round. The exact date shifts each month with the lunar calendar, typically falling somewhere between the 7th and the 28th. Check a lunar calendar or a Koh Phangan party calendar before booking your trip if the Full Moon Party is the main reason for your visit, since dates do not follow a fixed monthly pattern.
- Which side of Haad Rin is better to stay on — Nok or Nai? +
- It depends on what you want. Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) is where the Full Moon Party happens — staying on this side puts you in the middle of the action, with direct beach access on party night and an easy walk to the bars and restaurants. Haad Rin Nai (Leela Beach) is the calmer, west-facing side with the area's most polished accommodation including Explorar and Cocohut. For party-first visits, Nok. For a beach-and-resort experience with quieter water, Nai. The two are a five-minute walk apart, so neither choice cuts you off from the other side.
- Is Haad Rin safe? +
- Haad Rin is generally safe for travellers exercising normal precautions. On and around Full Moon Party nights, the headland sees very large crowds — pickpocketing risk rises, and drink safety (watching your drink, not accepting drinks from strangers) is worth being attentive to. The sea on Full Moon nights is busy with people and can be chaotic; swimming is generally inadvisable during the party itself. The headland has pharmacies, a clinic and the island's main hospital is in Thong Sala, a short ride away.
- How do I get from Thong Sala to Haad Rin? +
- Shared songthaews (pickup truck taxis) run the south-coast road between Thong Sala pier and Haad Rin throughout the day. The journey takes roughly twenty minutes in most conditions. On Full Moon nights, a higher-frequency service runs in both directions, but demand is heavy in the late evening and early morning so allow extra time or pre-book a private taxi for the return. Scooter riders follow the main south-coast road east from Thong Sala through Ban Tai to the Haad Rin headland.
- Can you enjoy Haad Rin outside of Full Moon Party nights? +
- Absolutely. Between Full Moon nights, Haad Rin settles into a relaxed beach neighbourhood — the two beaches are good for swimming, the village has a genuine spread of restaurants and bars beyond the party circuit, and the walkability of the headland makes it an unusually easy base. The quiet days after a Full Moon Party are some of the most pleasant times to be here: the beach is clean, the headland is calm, and the contrast with the night before is marked. Travellers staying several nights often find the ordinary character of Haad Rin as appealing as the party.
