Ban Tai
Ban Tai is the long, easygoing stretch of south coast that runs between Thong Sala, the island's main port, and the party beaches of Haad Rin. It's one of Koh Phangan's longest beaches, and it earns its reputation as the practical place to base yourself: close to the pier, the hypermarkets and the hospital, but still on the water. The shoreline splits between rockier sections and stretches of fine sand, and in high season the water stays calm and shallow enough for an easy swim, which is why it draws so many families and longer-stay guests.
The vibe is central and unpretentious rather than scenic-postcard. You'll find an unusually deep run of guesthouses, villas, hostels and adults-only boutique stays, plus some of the island's best-loved Thai and international restaurants and beach bars. It's also one of Koh Phangan's main kitesurfing spots in the dry season (roughly December–April), when the steady northeast wind crosses the shallow water, and a launch point for boat trips around the island. And it sits right next to the action: the Half Moon Festival is held in the forest just inland, so you're a short ride from the big parties without sleeping on top of them.
Best for Best for first-timers, families and longer stays who want to be central and well-connected without paying beachfront-resort prices.

Ban Tai, answered
- Is Ban Tai good for families? +
- Yes. The sand-and-shallow sections of the beach stay calm in high season (roughly December to April), which is gentle for kids, and you're close to Thong Sala's supermarkets, pharmacies and the hospital. Plenty of guesthouses and villas here suit families and longer stays.
- Is it close to the parties? +
- Very. The Half Moon Festival is held in the forest just inland from Ban Tai, and you're a short taxi or songthaew ride from Haad Rin's Full Moon Party. That means you can join the parties and still come back to a quiet beach to sleep, instead of being in the middle of it all night.
- How easy is it to get around from Ban Tai? +
- It's one of the most convenient bases on the island. Ban Tai runs along the main south-coast road, so songthaews and taxis pass constantly, and you're only a few minutes from the Thong Sala pier for boats to the mainland and Koh Samui. Renting a scooter is the usual way to explore the rest of the island.
- Can you swim and do watersports here? +
- Swimming is best on the sandy stretches in high season when the water is calm; some sections are rockier and shallower at low tide, so it varies along the beach. Ban Tai is also the island's main kitesurfing base in the dry season (roughly December–April), when steady wind meets flat, shallow water, and it's a common departure point for boat trips and charters.
