Koh Phangan on a Budget
Cheap beds, street food and getting around without overspending.
Koh Phangan can be a luxury island or a backpacker classic — your call. Here’s how to keep it cheap without missing the good stuff.
Cheap beds
Social hostels like The Wanderlust, Bunkhouse and See Sea Backpackers keep dorm prices low, while simple beachfront huts such as Coconut Beach Bungalows get you on the sand for less. Browse all options under Hotels & Stays and sort by what suits you.
Eat like a local
The cheapest, best food is at the markets — the Thong Sala night market does grilled seafood, curries and mango sticky rice for pocket change. There’s plenty more in the where-to-eat guide and the cafés & restaurants directory.
Getting around
Scooters are the cheapest way to explore, but the roads are steep and accidents are common — wear a helmet, check the brakes, and skip it if you’re not confident. Shared songthaew taxis cover the main routes. See getting to & around the island for the ferry side.
Free island
The best things cost nothing: sunset at Zen Beach, the hidden northern coves, and the monthly buzz of the Full Moon Party (the beach is free; the buckets are not). Long-stayers can stretch budgets further — see the nomad guide.
