Haad Chao Phao Beach
Haad Chao Phao is the largely overlooked gem sandwiched between two of Koh Phangan's better-known west-coast stretches — Haad Yao to the north and Sri Thanu to the south. The bay is long and gently curving, with soft sand and a calm, shallow seabed that makes it one of the more forgiving beaches on the island for children and less confident swimmers. At the southern end, a small natural lagoon sits between the main beach and the headland, and the rocks here are the home of Pirate Bar, one of the island's most characterful sunset-watching spots.
Because it faces due west across the Gulf of Thailand, Haad Chao Phao is above all a sunset beach. Every clear evening the sky goes from gold to deep orange over the open water, and the scene at Pirate Bar in the late afternoon — drinks on the rocks, the sun dropping into the sea — is exactly what most people picture when they imagine a Thai island sunset. Outside that golden hour the bay is quiet and unhurried, with a small run of beachfront resorts and bungalow places set back behind the palms and easy access to Sri Thanu's wholefood cafes, yoga shalas and massage studios just a few minutes south.
