Best Swimming Beaches on Koh Phangan

Calm clear water at a west-coast beach on Koh Phangan, ideal for swimming

Not all of Koh Phangan's beaches are equal for swimming. The island has a great variety — wide west-coast arcs, secluded northeast bays, reef-sheltered north-coast coves — but each coast behaves differently by season and tide. West-coast beaches are the easiest to reach and the most photogenic at sunset, but many are very shallow at low tide, when you wade out a long way before finding depth. The northeast beaches at Thong Nai Pan are deeper and clearer, tide-independent, and often uncrowded. The northwest (Mae Haad, Haad Salad) is calm and family-friendly, with shore snorkelling as a bonus.

The beaches below are picked specifically for swimming quality — water depth, clarity, seabed underfoot and safety — not just for their looks or atmosphere. Some of the island's most photographed beaches (Zen Beach, Secret Beach, Hin Kong) are better for sunsets than for a serious swim. The ones here are where you actually get in the water.

Haad Yao · West coast · Easy access

Haad Yao — the west-coast all-rounder

Haad Yao — Long Beach — is more than a kilometre of fine white sand that shelves gently into calm, clear water. Through the high season it is one of the most reliably swimmable beaches on the island: a soft sandy seabed, no strong currents and a gradual entry that suits both children and weaker swimmers. There is a fringing coral reef offshore for those who want to snorkel after their swim. Because it faces due west and has beachfront cafes and bars right on the sand, a late-afternoon swim followed by sundowners is the easy, satisfying rhythm most visitors fall into. Swimming is best from mid to high tide; at the lowest tides the bay becomes very shallow and you need to wade out further.

Thong Nai Pan · Northeast coast · Deeper water

Thong Nai Pan — year-round clear water

Thong Nai Pan is the quiet, polished corner of Koh Phangan's northeast coast, and its two horseshoe bays — Noi and Yai — offer some of the best swimming on the island. Unlike the shallow, tide-dependent west-coast beaches, the sea here is deeper and clearer and stays swimmable year-round without needing to time your visit around the tide. The northeast-facing bay is sheltered and calm for most of the year, and the horseshoe shape of each cove gives additional protection. The trade-off is the access: a steep, winding ridge road. But for swimmers who want reliable, clear, deep-enough-to-actually-swim water, Thong Nai Pan is the honest answer on this island.

Mae Haad & the Koh Ma sandbar

Mae Haad is the northwest-coast beach famous for the natural sandbar that surfaces at low tide, letting you walk out to the uninhabited Koh Ma islet on a strip of pale sand with the Gulf on both sides. The bay itself shelves very gently and stays calm and shallow — ideal for children and families who want a safe, forgiving entry. At mid to high tide the water deepens enough for a proper swim, and the reef around Koh Ma is widely considered the best shore-entry snorkelling on the island. The combination of a safe family swim beach, a low-tide sandbar walk and accessible coral makes Mae Haad one of the most complete swimming destinations on Koh Phangan.

Haad Salad · Northwest coast · Snorkelling

Haad Salad — sheltered northwest cove

Haad Salad is a compact horseshoe cove on the northwest coast, sheltered by headlands at each end that keep the water calm and clear even when more exposed beaches are choppy. The sandy seabed and gentle entry make it a strong swimming beach, particularly for families; conditions are easiest at mid to high tide. What lifts it above a straightforward swim beach is the reef around the rocky points at each end of the bay — some of the better shore snorkelling on the island is reachable without a boat. Because it faces west, the bay also delivers reliable sunsets, and the mood is unhurried rather than crowded.

Chaloklum · North coast · Snorkelling

Haad Khom (Coral Bay) — reef-sheltered calm

Haad Khom, known locally as Coral Bay, is a small north-coast cove east of Chaloklum where a living reef wraps the mouth of the bay, sheltering the water and keeping it calm and glassy even when the open sea is choppy. This reef protection means you can snorkel straight off the sand, which is unusual on Koh Phangan, where most reef sites require a boat. The bay is low-key and off-grid rather than developed, with just a handful of beach bars and bungalows. Swim out toward the buoys for the healthiest coral; the inner shallows are worn. Easy by scooter from Chaloklum, and often quieter than the more famous west-coast beaches.

Swimming on Koh Phangan, answered

Which beach on Koh Phangan has the best swimming?
+
Thong Nai Pan on the northeast coast has the deepest, clearest water and stays swimmable year-round without being tide-dependent — it's the most reliably good swimming on the island. Haad Yao on the west coast is the most accessible all-rounder, with a long, gently shelving sandy beach and easy facilities. Mae Haad on the northwest is the top family pick: very shallow and calm, with the Koh Ma sandbar walk and shore snorkelling nearby.
Can you swim at all the beaches on Koh Phangan?
+
Not equally. The west-coast beaches (Haad Yao, Haad Salad, Mae Haad) are good for swimming at mid to high tide but can be very shallow at low tide when the tidal flats are exposed. The northeast beaches at Thong Nai Pan are deeper and tide-independent, which is why they're often rated the best swimming on the island. The north-coast Haad Khom is reef-sheltered and calm. Beaches like Zen Beach and Hin Kong are better for sunset atmosphere than serious swimming. And Haad Rin is fine for swimming on non-party days but is primarily a social beach.
Is swimming safe on Koh Phangan?
+
Generally yes in the high season (roughly November to April) when the Gulf of Thailand is calm. The island has no dangerous rip currents on the main beaches. The main hazard on west-coast beaches is the tidal flat — at very low tide you need to wade out a fair way before the water is deep enough, which creates risks if swimmers get tired before reaching shore. The reef beaches (Haad Khom, Koh Ma, Haad Salad headlands) require care around sea urchins on exposed rock. Always check local conditions before swimming, particularly at the start of the monsoon season.
Is there good snorkelling off the swimming beaches?
+
Yes, at several of them. The Koh Ma reef off Mae Haad is the most accessible and most cited — a living coral reef you can snorkel directly from the sand without a boat. Haad Salad has a reef roughly 100 metres offshore, and Haad Khom (Coral Bay) near Chaloklum has reef wrapping the bay mouth. Haad Yao has a fringing reef offshore, and the rocky headlands at Thong Nai Pan offer some reef fish. For the island's best diving, the sites around Sail Rock are reached by boat from Chaloklum.
When is the best time to swim on Koh Phangan?
+
The high season from roughly December to April brings the calmest, clearest water and the most reliable swimming conditions across the island. The west coast is calmer in this period. The northeast beaches at Thong Nai Pan are sheltered from the southwest monsoon swell and swim well throughout the year, though the northeast monsoon from October to January can build some chop on the east side. The wet season (May to October) sees quieter beaches and lower prices, and swimming is still usually possible — just check conditions day by day.
Which beach is best for children?
+
Mae Haad on the northwest coast is the top family pick: very shallow, wave-free water, a gently shelving sandy seabed and the added fun of the Koh Ma sandbar walk at low tide. Haad Salad is also good for small children at mid tide. Thong Nai Pan is comfortable for families — calm, clear and with good resorts nearby. All three beaches stay quiet, which is an advantage with young children compared to busier spots like Haad Rin.
