The seasonal pattern
December – April
Dry northeast monsoon. Calm seas, reliable sunshine, the most beach days. February and March are the pick of the year. Book early — particularly around Full Moon dates.
May – August
Warm seas, brief afternoon showers, lush jungle. Crowds thin, prices fall. Good for wellness, waterfalls and anyone who prefers a quieter island.
September – November
The Gulf's peak rain window. Rough seas, persistent showers possible. Lowest prices of the year. Suits flexible, budget-driven travellers; outdoor activities are weather-dependent.
Planning guides
Koh Phangan timing, answered
- What is the best month to visit Koh Phangan? +
- February and March are the peak of the dry season — calm seas, sunny days and the island at its most accessible. December and January are a close second: cooler but equally reliable. If you want good weather with fewer crowds and more modest prices, April is the last of the dry months and still dependable. The island rewards visits at any time of year, but these four months carry the least weather risk.
- When is the rainy season in Koh Phangan? +
- Koh Phangan sits on the Gulf of Thailand, which has a different seasonal pattern to the Andaman coast. The wettest months here are October and November, when persistent rain and rough seas are possible. September also sees heavy showers. This is roughly the opposite of Phuket's rainy window, so visitors switching between Thailand's two coasts need to keep the difference in mind. The dry northeast monsoon arrives in December and runs through April.
- Is it worth visiting Koh Phangan in the monsoon (September–November)? +
- Yes, for the right traveller. The monsoon months bring the lowest accommodation prices of the year, the island's most dramatic waterfalls as the interior streams fill, and a quieter, more local atmosphere. The trade-off is unpredictable weather: rough seas can cancel or delay ferries, and some beach days will be rained out. Yoga studios, wellness retreats, cooking classes and restaurants operate normally — indoor activities are unaffected. With flexibility built in, the monsoon can be a genuinely rewarding time to visit.
- Does the Full Moon Party run all year? +
- Yes. The Full Moon Party runs once a month at Haad Rin beach throughout the year, regardless of weather or season. A wet Full Moon is still a Full Moon Party. The more important planning consideration is that dates shift slightly month by month following the lunar calendar and can move for Thai public holidays; check the lunar calendar before booking if the party is a priority. High-season Full Moons in the December–April window are significantly larger events than those in the quieter months.
- When is Koh Phangan at its cheapest? +
- September, October and November — the monsoon window — are when accommodation and tour prices drop to their lowest. May and June, the early shoulder season, also offer noticeably lower rates than peak with better weather than the deeper monsoon. Prices in the dry season (December–April) are at their highest, with February and March commanding the strongest premiums around popular dates.
- Is July or August a good time to visit Koh Phangan? +
- July and August are good months, not just adequate ones. The Gulf of Thailand's weather pattern means the west-coast monsoon that affects Phuket and Krabi causes much less disruption here. Expect warm seas, generally bright days with short afternoon showers, and a moderate visitor uptick from European school holidays — but nowhere near peak-season density. Waterfalls are fuller, the jungle is lush, and prices sit comfortably below the February and March peak.
