Thong Nai Pan Beach
Most conversations about which beach to base yourself on Koh Phangan eventually arrive at Thong Nai Pan. The northeast corner of the island holds two pale-sand horseshoe bays — Yai to the south and Noi tucked into the headland above it — separated by a low wooded ridge and a short scooter ride. Together they offer something rare on an island more famous for its parties and western sunsets: consistently swimmable sea, a mix of quality accommodation, and an unhurried pace that holds even when the rest of the island is busy.
The water here is the difference that matters most. Because the bays face northeast, they catch neither the tidal extremes of the west coast nor the seasonal swell that can close off the southern beaches. The sea is deeper, clearer, and swimmable in the morning, afternoon or evening regardless of the tide. You do not need to check a chart before going in — you just go in.
Getting here takes a little more effort than other parts of the island. The road from Thong Sala climbs steeply over the northeast ridge before descending to the bay — a route that most day-trippers weigh against easier options and often skip. The result is a beach that retains its character despite being one of the most highly rated on the island. Once you are there, the infrastructure is comfortable: proper restaurants, reliable accommodation across a range of budgets, and enough to keep you on the bay for days.
