Malibu Beach — Haad Malibu

Malibu Beach (Haad Malibu), Koh Phangan — secluded north-coast cove between Haad Khom and Bottle Beach

Tucked into the north coast of Koh Phangan between the reef-sheltered Haad Khom and the more remote Bottle Beach, Malibu Beach is one of those coves the island keeps to itself. A small, palm-backed arc of sand, it sits just far enough off the main road to stay genuinely quiet — there is no beach road, so you arrive by longtail boat from Chaloklum or by a short track through the jungle.

The feel is off-grid and unhurried: a handful of simple bungalows and a beach kitchen, calm north-coast water, and the low background sound of the jungle rather than a playlist. It is the kind of cove that rewards people who make the small effort to get there. Because Chaloklum is only a short boat hop away, Malibu Beach works well as a day escape from the village, or as a base for guests who want a remote-feeling beach without losing access to Chaloklum's dive boats for a Sail Rock trip.

What Malibu Beach is about

Off-grid · Quiet cove · North coast

Seclusion without isolation

Malibu Beach has the stripped-back calm of a genuinely remote beach — no beach clubs, no sunbed rows, no sound system — but it is only a short longtail hop from Chaloklum village. That proximity is the key detail. After a morning on the sand, Chaloklum's cafes and dive operators are minutes away by boat, and the village pier connects to Sail Rock and the wider north-coast sites. You get the seclusion without the commitment of being truly cut off. A handful of simple bungalows and a beach kitchen are the sum total of facilities on the cove — bring cash and essentials.

Sheltered · Clear water · Dry season best

Calm swimming in a sheltered bay

The north-facing bay is generally calm and sheltered, with clear water that makes for an easy, relaxed swim through the dry season (roughly December to April). Some coral and fish can be found around the rocky edges of the cove, worth a look if you have a mask, though for the island's best shore-entry reef the nearby Haad Khom (Coral Bay) is the stronger choice. The water is sandy and shallow close in, deepening gradually as you move out. It is the kind of bay where you wade in, float and stay a while rather than fighting a current.

The north-coast cluster

Malibu Beach sits at the centre of the north coast's most interesting cluster of spots. To the west, Haad Khom (Coral Bay) is the island's best shore-entry snorkelling reef, a few minutes by boat or motorbike. To the east, Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) is the island's most remote no-road bay, reached by longtail. Chaloklum village anchors the whole arc from the west — the fishing village, dive centre pier and a handful of genuinely good cafes and kitchens. Thong Nai Pan, the island's most polished resort corner, is over the ridge to the northeast. Malibu Beach works well as a quiet overnight base or as a stop on a longtail snorkel circuit of the north coast.

Getting there: longtail or jungle track

There is no sealed road to Malibu Beach. The standard and most straightforward route is a longtail boat from Chaloklum pier — a short hop east along the north coast that drops you directly onto the sand. The alternative is a rough jungle track on foot, best attempted in dry conditions with sturdy footwear; ask locally about the current state of the path before setting out. Because the only way in is by sea or on foot, the beach stays genuinely quiet in a way that road-accessible beaches rarely manage. Return boats can be arranged with your boatman at the start of the trip.

Malibu Beach, answered

How do you get to Malibu Beach?
+
There is no sealed road to Malibu Beach. The most straightforward way is a longtail boat from Chaloklum village, a short hop east along the north coast. There is also a rough jungle track on foot, but it is unpaved and best tackled in dry conditions with sturdy footwear. Ask at your accommodation in Chaloklum for current options and arrange your return time with the boatman before setting out.
Can you swim at Malibu Beach?
+
Yes — the bay is calm and generally sheltered, with clear water and a manageable sandy entry in the calm season. As with most north-coast beaches on Koh Phangan, conditions are best from roughly December to April in the dry season, when the seas are at their calmest and clearest.
Is there anywhere to stay or eat on Malibu Beach?
+
A small number of basic bungalow operations and a beach kitchen are the main options on the cove itself — facilities are minimal, so bring cash and any essentials. If you want more choice for food, accommodation and services, Chaloklum village is a short boat or walk away and has a good spread of casual restaurants, cafes and dive centres.
Is the snorkelling good at Malibu Beach?
+
There is some coral and fish to be found around the rocky edges of the cove, worth exploring with a mask if you have one. However, for the island's best north-coast reef snorkelling, Haad Khom (Coral Bay) just to the west is the stronger choice — it has a living coral reef you can walk straight into from the sand. Malibu Beach is more about the seclusion and calm swimming than the reef.
