Sail Rock — Day Trips from Koh Phangan

Diving at Sail Rock (Hin Bai) from Koh Phangan, Gulf of Thailand

Sail Rock — Hin Bai in Thai — is the dive site that pulls serious divers to this part of the Gulf of Thailand. A solitary granite pinnacle rising from open water roughly midway between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, it has a claim that most island reef dives in Thailand cannot make: it is genuinely good on its own terms, not just relative to the beach nearby.

From Koh Phangan, boats depart from Chaloklum on the north coast — the island's closest point to the site — on early-start day trips that return by mid-afternoon. The Chimney, a vertical swim-through inside the rock itself, is the headline feature. The dense schooling fish around the walls are the ambient backdrop. And the whale shark reputation — earned rather than invented — is the reason divers who have been to Sail Rock once tend to return.

This page covers what to expect at the site, how to get there, what certification you need, and which operators run the trip. For the broader context of diving on Koh Phangan — including PADI courses, local reef sites and snorkelling options — see the full diving guide.

What makes Sail Rock worth the trip

Hin Bai · Vertical swim-through · Open water pinnacle

The Chimney — Sail Rock's signature dive

Sail Rock's most memorable feature is The Chimney: a vertical passage through the granite core of the pinnacle itself. You descend outside the rock, find the opening and swim through a narrow fissure that channels light from above and deposits you on the other side — the kind of dive that stays with you. Around the pinnacle walls, dense schools of chevron barracuda and trevally orbit in formation, and the exposed rock face draws surgeonfish, parrotfish and snappers in numbers that match most Indo-Pacific reef systems. For a dive site in the Gulf of Thailand, the sheer density of marine life is remarkable. The site rewards the journey to get there.

Day trips from Koh Phangan — what to expect

Sail Rock sits roughly midway between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in the open Gulf of Thailand, making it a proper boat trip from the island's north coast — not a short hop. Most operators depart early from Chaloklum, the north-coast fishing village that is the island's closest point to the pinnacle, and return by mid-afternoon. Trips are typically structured as two-tank day trips: enough time for two dives on and around the rock without rushing. Conditions in the open Gulf are more variable than in sheltered bays, so departure sometimes shifts or cancels in rough weather — book with an operator who communicates clearly on this, and build flexibility into your schedule for Sail Rock.

Whale sharks — the big draw

Sail Rock has a genuine reputation for whale shark sightings — real enough that it appears in most roundups of the best whale shark destinations in the Gulf of Thailand. The site's position in open, deep water, the density of baitfish that concentrates around the pinnacle, and the relatively low boat traffic make conditions more favourable for a large pelagic visitor. That said, whale sharks move on their own schedule and sightings are not predictable. Come for the Chimney, the fish schools and the wall dives; treat a whale shark as a bonus if one appears. Operators cannot promise sightings — be cautious of any that do.

Certification and experience — what level you need

Open Water certification is the minimum to join a Sail Rock day trip. That gets you in the water on the main dives, but the deeper sections of the site — where the walls drop off and the big schools tend to congregate — are better experienced with Advanced Open Water or equivalent. If you've been out of the water for a while, most Chaloklum operators can arrange a refresher dive in the calm local bays before the Sail Rock trip. For those not yet certified, full PADI Open Water courses are available from Haad Yao Divers on the west coast and from the Chaloklum operators — a course on Koh Phangan often includes Sail Rock as part of the qualifying dives.

Diving guides

Sail Rock, answered

Where is Sail Rock and how do you get there from Koh Phangan?
+
Sail Rock (Hin Bai in Thai) is a lone granite pinnacle rising from open water roughly midway between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand. From Koh Phangan, dive operators depart from Chaloklum on the island's north coast — the closest point on the island to the site. The crossing takes longer than a typical reef hop; most day trips leave early and return by mid-afternoon, running as two-tank dives. It is not a beach walk or a short snorkel trip.
Do you need a dive certification to dive Sail Rock?
+
Yes. Open Water certification (or equivalent from another certifying agency) is the minimum required to join a Sail Rock day trip. Advanced Open Water is strongly recommended if you want to dive the deeper sections and make the most of The Chimney swim-through. If you need to get certified first, PADI courses are available from operators in Chaloklum and from Haad Yao Divers on the west coast — some courses include Sail Rock as part of the qualifying dives.
What is the Chimney at Sail Rock?
+
The Chimney is a vertical swim-through inside the pinnacle itself — a fissure in the granite through which you descend from one depth and emerge at another, with light filtering down from above. It is considered one of the most distinctive single-dive features in the Gulf of Thailand, and it is the main reason experienced divers make the trip specifically for Sail Rock rather than treating it as just another site.
Can you snorkel at Sail Rock?
+
Snorkelling at Sail Rock is technically possible on the surface above the pinnacle when conditions are calm, but it is not the reason to make the trip. The most compelling features of the site — The Chimney, the schooling fish on the deeper walls, the full sense of the pinnacle — are only accessible to certified divers. For non-divers, the island's best snorkelling is at the Koh Ma reef off Mae Haad beach, reachable without a long boat crossing.
Are whale sharks common at Sail Rock?
+
Sail Rock has a genuine reputation as one of the Gulf of Thailand's better spots for whale shark sightings. The site's location in open, deep water and the concentration of baitfish around the pinnacle create conditions that large pelagics prefer. That said, sightings are never guaranteed and no operator can promise them — whale sharks move on their own schedule. The consensus advice from regular Sail Rock divers is to go for the Chimney and the fish schools, and treat a whale shark as a welcome bonus.
When is the best time to dive Sail Rock?
+
Visibility and sea conditions are generally best from roughly December through April, the Gulf's dry season, when open-water crossing conditions are more settled and the Sail Rock trips run reliably. During wetter months, rougher seas can delay or cancel departures — the open Gulf is more exposed than the sheltered west-coast bays. Diving is possible year-round on calmer weeks; check with operators on current conditions rather than relying on season averages.
Is Sail Rock better from Koh Phangan or Koh Tao?
+
The site is accessible from both islands. Koh Tao has a larger dive industry and more boats running to Sail Rock, and some divers base on Koh Tao specifically for the diving. From Koh Phangan, the crossing is similarly long but the boats are typically smaller and the groups more manageable. If diving is your sole purpose, Koh Tao has more infrastructure. If you want Sail Rock alongside beaches, wellness and a broader island experience, Koh Phangan is the practical choice — Chaloklum operators have been running the trip for years.
