Sri Thanu — Koh Phangan's Yoga & Wellness Village

Sri Thanu, Koh Phangan — yoga shala and wholefood cafe on the west-coast wellness strip

Sri Thanu is the part of Koh Phangan the wellness world has quietly claimed. On a stretch of west coast between Thong Sala and Haad Yao, a loose village of shalas, healing centres, wholefood cafes and coworking spots has grown up over the years — not by design, but by gravitational pull. The yoga and conscious-living community came, stayed longer than planned, then came back. The infrastructure grew to match.

What you find here now is the best concentration of yoga teaching, sound healing, ecstatic dance, cacao ceremony, Thai bodywork and plant-based food anywhere on the island. ETHOS, Orion Healing, Sati Yoga and Wonderland are among the most established names, but the map shifts with the seasons as teachers arrive and set up pop-up programmes. The baseline is always the same: morning practice, slow lunch, an afternoon session of some kind, and the sunset from Zen Beach at the north end of the strip.

Sri Thanu is not for everyone. There are no pool parties, no beach clubs and virtually no nightlife. If those are the draw, the south end of the island is where to go. If you want a week or a month of deliberate living, good food and community — this is the only address on Koh Phangan that makes real sense.

What Sri Thanu is about

Yoga, healing & the wellness scene

Sri Thanu is where the yoga community on Koh Phangan has put down roots. Shalas and healing centres — ETHOS, Orion Healing, Sati Yoga, Evolve, Wonderland — sit a few minutes apart along the main road and on the beach access tracks. Classes run across multiple styles and levels, from alignment-focused Hatha and Yin to movement-based and restorative practice. Beyond yoga, the area has built a full wellness infrastructure: Thai massage, bodywork, sound healing, breathwork, cacao ceremonies and ecstatic dance all run regularly here. The AUM Sound Healing Center and The Tipi are well-known venues for group events and gatherings. If you want to build a structured daily wellness rhythm rather than pick up a class here and there, Sri Thanu is the obvious base on the island.

Cafes, food and the plant-based scene

The food scene in Sri Thanu has grown up alongside the wellness community, and the result is one of the best concentrations of wholefood and plant-forward cooking on the island. ETHOS runs a café alongside its shala — smoothie bowls, wraps and clean cooked food in a welcoming space that doubles as a community meeting point. Deli Devi, Sticky Island, Mimi's and Kia Ora are well-loved by locals and long-stayers for their slow-coffee setups, seasonal menus and the kind of atmosphere that invites you to stay for a second hour. This is not a strip of tourist restaurants: the cooking here reflects the crowd — conscious, nourishing, built around quality ingredients rather than volume. For anyone eating plant-based or following a specific diet, Sri Thanu has the widest choice on the island.

Zen Beach & the west-coast sunset

Sri Thanu faces the Gulf of Thailand, which means the daily climax is the sunset — and Zen Beach, at the northern end of the area, is where people come to watch it. Each evening a loose drum and fire circle gathers on the sand as the light drops: informal, everyone-welcome and one of the most photographed moments on the island. At low tide you can walk north along the shoreline from the village to reach it. The water along this stretch of coast is calm and shallow — better for wading and atmosphere than deep swimming, though swimmable at higher tides. Neighbouring Hin Kong sits just to the south, with more quiet beach and a wide low-tide sandflat that mirrors the evening sky.

Long stays, nomads & the community pace

Sri Thanu is not a place most people pass through — it is a place people end up staying in far longer than planned. The pace is slow and the infrastructure supports it: Beachub and Inner Space offer coworking and laptop-friendly café work, villa and bungalow rentals here often price better by the month than by the week, and the community of long-stayers creates a social fabric that is hard to find on more transient stretches of the island. This is the corner of Koh Phangan the digital-nomad and conscious-living crowd makes its home, not just its holiday. If you are staying for more than a few weeks and want to feel settled rather than always arriving, Sri Thanu is the most natural base on the island's west coast.

Sri Thanu, answered

What is Sri Thanu known for on Koh Phangan?
+
Sri Thanu is the island's wellness and yoga hub — a low-key village on the west coast where shalas, healing centres, wholefood cafes and bodywork studios cluster within a short walk of each other. ETHOS, Orion Healing, Sati Yoga and Wonderland are among the best-known venues. The community draws long-stayers, yoga practitioners, digital nomads and the conscious-living crowd from around the world. Evenings revolve around the sunset and informal drum circles at nearby Zen Beach.
Is Sri Thanu good for yoga retreats and classes?
+
Yes — it has the highest concentration of yoga shalas and wellness venues on the island. Classes run daily across multiple styles and levels, including Hatha, Yin, alignment-focused and restorative. Several centres also run multi-day retreats, teacher trainings and healing programmes. Ecstatic dance, cacao ceremonies, breathwork and sound healing sessions run regularly alongside the yoga calendar, so there is almost always something on.
What is Zen Beach and why do people go there?
+
Zen Beach is the sunset gathering point at the northern end of the Sri Thanu area. Every evening an informal drum and fire circle forms on the sand as the sun drops over the Gulf of Thailand — it is open to anyone who shows up. The beach faces due west, making it one of the island's best-placed spots for a sea sunset. It is accessible by walking north along the shore at low tide from the Sri Thanu village strip.
Is Sri Thanu good for swimming?
+
The west coast here is calm and generally safe for wading and casual swimming at higher tides, but the water can become very shallow and seagrassy at low tide. It is better known as a sunset and atmosphere beach than a swimming one. For a proper swim on the west coast, Haad Yao to the north has a longer sandy beach that swims more reliably, and Mae Haad further north has the island's best accessible snorkelling reef.
How do I get around from Sri Thanu?
+
Most things you need on a daily basis — cafes, shalas, massage, small shops — are within walking distance along the main road and beach tracks. A scooter is the easiest way to reach the rest of the island: Thong Sala, the main town and ferry pier, is roughly 20 minutes south, and Haad Yao and Mae Haad to the north are 10 to 20 minutes away. Shared songthaew taxis run the main west-coast road if you prefer not to ride.
Is Sri Thanu suitable for families with children?
+
It can work for families who want a slow, healthy base rather than resort entertainment. The calm west-coast water is safe for paddling, the wholefood cafe scene is family-friendly, and the pace is gentle. That said, there is nothing built specifically for children here — no big resort pools, no kids' clubs, no beach activities aimed at families. Families who want beach access, resort facilities and an activity-rich environment tend to be better served by Thong Nai Pan or Haad Yao.
Is Sri Thanu good for digital nomads?
+
Yes. Beachub and Inner Space are the main coworking and café-work spots, and both have reliable internet. The community of long-stayers and nomads here is well-established, so the social side looks after itself. Villa and bungalow rentals are often available by the month at reasonable rates compared with holiday-priced accommodation elsewhere on the island. The yoga and wellness calendar means there is always something to fill time outside of work hours.
