Salad Beach

Salad Beach (Haad Salad), Koh Phangan — sheltered northwest cove with palm-backed sand and calm clear water

Tucked into the northwest corner of Koh Phangan, Haad Salad is a compact horseshoe of pale sand backed by coconut palms and low green hills. The headlands at either end wrap around the bay and soften the wind, so the water tends to stay calm and glassy even when more exposed beaches are choppy. It is the kind of cove where you wade in, float, and stay a while rather than fight a current.

The snorkelling is the other thing people come for. Those same rocky headlands that shelter the swimming hold coral and a working reef community — reef fish, the odd moray eel, parrotfish turning chunks of coral into sand. It is not a dive site, but for a shore-entry snorkel that costs nothing and requires no advance planning, the edges of Haad Salad are among the more rewarding on the west coast.

The mood is unhurried and low-key. A string of small resorts and beach bungalows line the back of the sand, with a handful of restaurants and Pyramid Yoga a short walk inland, but there is no nightlife circuit here. Because it sits on the west coast, the sun drops straight into the sea most evenings, turning the bay gold and pink. Pair an afternoon swim with sundowners and you have most of Haad Salad's appeal in one sitting.

What Salad Beach is about

Protected bay · Sandy entry · Easy swimming

A sheltered cove with calm, clear water

What makes Salad Beach different from most of the west-coast options on Koh Phangan is the headlands. Rocky points at both ends of the bay wrap around the cove and block the wind, which keeps the surface unusually calm even when other beaches are choppy. The seabed shelves gently from a sandy entry, and the water stays clear enough to see the bottom well out from shore. At high tide this is one of the easier, more comfortable swims on the island — no surf, no significant current and no rough scramble over rocks to reach the water. At lower tide the flats become shallower and rockier at the edges, so reef shoes help and the best swimming window is around mid to high tide.

Snorkelling the rocky headlands

The same headlands that shelter the swimming also create the best snorkelling on the beach. Swim out toward the rocky points at either end of the bay and the sandy bottom gives way to coral, with a mix of reef fish — parrotfish, wrasse, sergeant majors — working over the rock. It is not the island's most dramatic snorkelling site, but for a shore-entry spot that requires no boat and no guide, the rocky edges of Haad Salad are among the more rewarding on the west coast. Head to the northern point for the best visibility and the biggest concentration of fish. At low tide, pick your entry carefully to avoid stepping on sea urchins that lurk in the shallower rock.

Sea sunset · Clear evenings · Beach bars on the sand

West-facing sunsets over the sea

Because Salad Beach sits on the northwest coast, the bay faces west and the sun sets straight over the Gulf of Thailand most evenings. There is no headland cutting off the view at an angle — just open water and a horizon that turns gold, then pink, then deep. The timing varies through the year but the show is reliably dramatic on clear evenings. A handful of small beach bars and resort terraces face the water along the back of the sand, so the standard approach is to get out of the sea around mid-afternoon, find a sun lounger or a low table on the beach, and order whatever you're drinking while the light shifts. It is a simple pleasure and a very good one.

The northwest coast — between Chaloklum and Haad Yao

Haad Salad sits between Chaloklum to the north and Haad Yao to the south — a stretch of the northwest coast that the island's party circuit does not reach. The beach has a string of small, well-regarded resorts and bungalow operations, a couple of beach restaurants and a yoga retreat inland, but no nightlife strip and no organised events on the sand. The road in descends steeply from the main west-coast ring road, which is enough of a deterrent that the cove stays noticeably quieter than beaches with easier access. Pyramid Yoga, a few minutes' walk from the sand, gives the neighbourhood a gentle wellness edge. Haad Yao — broader and more developed — is an easy scooter ride south for days when you want more beachfront infrastructure.

Salad Beach, answered

Can you swim at Salad Beach?
+
Yes. The cove is sheltered by headlands at both ends, so the water is usually calm and clear with an easy sandy entry. It is shallow in places — good for families — but gets rockier and shallower at low tide, when reef shoes help. The best swimming window is around mid to high tide.
Is the snorkelling good at Haad Salad?
+
It is among the better west-coast snorkelling spots on the island. Head to the rocky points at either end of the bay, where you'll find coral and reef fish including parrotfish and wrasse. Keep clear of the rocks at low tide and watch for sea urchins in the shallows.
Does Salad Beach have sunsets?
+
Yes. It faces west on the northwest coast, so on clear evenings the sun sets straight into the sea — one of the beach's main draws alongside the swimming and snorkelling. Beach bars and resort terraces face the water to make the most of it.
How do you get to Salad Beach?
+
By road from Thong Sala (about 30 minutes by scooter heading north on the ring road, then turning off west) or from Chaloklum to the north. The last section is a steep, paved descent to the beach. No boat crossing is needed — road access all the way to the sand.
Is there yoga near Salad Beach?
+
Yes. Pyramid Yoga operates a retreat a short walk from the beach and offers classes and courses. For a wider choice of yoga styles and teachers, the Sri Thanu wellness corridor further south is a 20-minute scooter ride with some of the island's best studios.
