Haad Khom (Coral Bay), Koh Phangan: Complete Beach Guide

Haad Khom — known locally as Coral Bay — is a small, reef-sheltered cove just east of Chaloklum on Koh Phangan's north coast. Its living reef means you can snorkel straight from the sand, the water stays calm even when the open sea is choppy, and the low-rise, off-grid atmosphere is a world away from the busy beaches in the south.

In this guide +

Tucked between Chaloklum fishing village and the boat-only sweep of Bottle Beach, Haad Khom is one of those north-coast spots that long-term island visitors guard quietly. The official name is Haad Khom; the name everyone actually uses is Coral Bay, and it earns the title. A reef wraps the mouth of the small cove and keeps the water calm and glassy — flat and sheltered when the open Gulf beyond is choppy — and you can slip off the sand and be over coral within a few strokes.

The beach itself is short and intimate, a curve of pale sand backed by palms with only a handful of low-key beach bars and bungalow operations behind it. It is unpolished, low-rise and genuinely off-grid in feel. There are no resort pools here, no beach clubs, no organised activity operators. What it has instead is a living reef, clear water, and a pace that has nothing to do with the Full Moon Party scene in the south. People who find it tend to keep coming back.

The beach faces north, so there is no sea sunset — what you get instead is the fishing fleet at anchor across the open water and soft amber light along the coast at dawn and dusk. If you want a sunset, Chaloklum and the west-coast beaches are a short ride away. Come to Haad Khom for the reef.

The cove — what Haad Khom is actually like

Haad Khom is small. That is the point. The curve of sand takes only a few minutes to walk, and development behind the beach is minimal: a bungalow or two, a simple beach bar, palms pressing in close on either side. The reef wrapping the mouth of the bay shelters the water, creating a natural breakwater that keeps the inner cove calmer than most north-coast beaches when a swell is running outside.

The cove is rated 4.7 from nearly 800 Google reviews — unusually high for a beach that has no resort infrastructure. The consistent theme in those reviews is the snorkelling, the calm water and the uncrowded atmosphere. First-time visitors often describe it as the beach they didn't know was on the island.

Because it faces north, Haad Khom does not deliver a west-coast sea sunset. The light is soft and coastal rather than dramatic, which suits the mood of the place. If sunsets are the priority, the west coast — Haad Yao, Haad Salad, Zen Beach — is a thirty-minute scooter ride. Haad Khom is a daytime beach and a morning swim beach, not an evening destination.

Snorkelling — the reef from the sand

The main reason to come to Haad Khom is the reef. You can get into the water directly from the beach, and within a few strokes you are above coral — which is rare on an island where most of the good snorkelling requires a boat. The inner reef close to shore has taken some wear over the years from foot traffic and warming seas, so the best coral and fish life are out toward the marker buoys rather than in the shallows.

Swim out past the inner section and the reef improves noticeably: more live coral, more fish, the usual cast of parrotfish, wrasse and the occasional clownfish tucked into an anemone. The water stays clear most of the year, with the best conditions generally during the dry season roughly December through April when visibility is at its peak and the sea is at its calmest.

A few things to know before you get in: the reef is shallow in patches at low tide, so mind your fins and where you put your hands. Bring your own mask and fins if possible, as rental options on the beach itself are limited — Chaloklum, a short walk or ride away, is a better place to hire gear. Wear water shoes or old trainers when walking over the shallower inner sections.

Getting there — the Chaloklum connection

Haad Khom sits just east of Chaloklum on the north coast, making it a straightforward extension of any time in the Chaloklum area. The drive from Chaloklum village is short — a few minutes by motorbike or scooter along the coast road, or a pleasant walk if you're staying nearby and not carrying heavy gear. Long-tail snorkel boats from Chaloklum also stop here as part of north-coast tours, which is a relaxed way to combine it with other spots.

From Thong Sala in the south, the drive takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes on the main interior road that winds north through the island's hilly jungle spine before dropping down to Chaloklum. A scooter gives you the flexibility to stop at viewpoints along the way, but the road has some steep sections — experienced riders only on the hill stretches. Songthaews (shared taxis) run from Thong Sala to Chaloklum and you can walk or take a short local ride from there.

Chaloklum itself is worth a stop in its own right — one of the few places on Koh Phangan where a working Thai fishing village sets the pace. The seafood restaurants along the waterfront, the diving operators and the pier where long-tail boats leave for Bottle Beach all make it a natural base for exploring the north coast.

Where to stay and eat near Haad Khom

Accommodation directly on or immediately behind Haad Khom is intentionally simple. Coconut Beach Bungalows is the closest stay, right by the cove, and reflects the character of the beach: low-rise, unfussy and well-placed for a snorkel before breakfast. Fanta Beach Resort sits within easy reach as the nearest beachfront resort option with slightly more structure than the bungalow operations. Silan Residence is another well-regarded stay in the Chaloklum area for travellers who want a comfortable base within reach of both the reef and the village.

For food, Chaloklum has the better spread. Kaif and Foods & Roots are both within easy reach — well-regarded spots for a meal that suits the village rhythm rather than the resort menu. For a proper massage after snorkelling, Nirvana Thai Massage is a short ride away and consistently well-reviewed.

For anything practical — ATMs, a pharmacy, a wider supermarket — Thong Sala is the destination. For dive trips, courses and Sail Rock connections, the dive operators based in Chaloklum run everything you need from the main pier.

Good to know

Can you snorkel at Haad Khom?
+
Yes — Haad Khom (Coral Bay) is one of the better shore-entry snorkels on Koh Phangan. You swim off the sand directly onto a reef. The inner coral close to shore is somewhat worn from foot traffic, so head out toward the buoys for the better fish and coral life. Bring your own gear if possible, as rental options on the beach are limited.
How do you get to Haad Khom from Thong Sala?
+
It takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes by scooter on the main north-coast road through the island's interior. From Chaloklum, which is the nearest village, it is a few minutes east by road or a short walk. Long-tail boats from Chaloklum also stop here as part of north-coast snorkel runs.
Is Haad Khom good for swimming?
+
Yes. The reef shelters the bay and the water is usually calm and shallow, which makes it gentle for swimming and comfortable for snorkellers. Watch for exposed coral patches and very shallow sections at low tide, and wear something on your feet around the rocky inner areas.
Is Haad Khom suitable for children?
+
Yes, for water-confident children who can manage the reef. The sheltered, shallow water is calm rather than wave-prone, which suits careful paddling and snorkelling. Mind the coral at low tide — water shoes help. Younger or non-swimming children are better placed on the sandflat sections, and parents should supervise closely near any coral heads.
What is the best time to visit Haad Khom?
+
The dry season, roughly December through April, brings the clearest water and the best visibility for snorkelling. The bay stays accessible and enjoyable through the rest of the year, but the southwest monsoon months (May to October) can bring lower visibility and occasional choppier periods. Aim for mid-tide rather than low tide for snorkelling — the inner reef is very shallow at low water.
