Secret Beach (Haad Son)

West-coast sunset cove with bohemian bar terraces built into the rocks and a fiery sea horizon.

Tucked into a small bay on Koh Phangan's steep western shore, Secret Beach — Haad Son in Thai — is one of the island's most reliably spectacular sunset spots. The cove is short, roughly a hundred metres of pale sand bookended by big smooth boulders, and that intimacy is the whole appeal. By day it stays quiet; by late afternoon visitors start arriving for sundowners as the sun drops straight into the channel between Phangan and the smaller offshore islands. A cluster of characterful beach bars at the southern end — built into the rocks and jungle, hung with lanterns and hammocks — make this an evening ritual rather than an all-day beach. The water is swimmable at high tide but turns shallow and rocky at low tide, so the draw here is the sunset atmosphere far more than the swimming.
